Step 1

Consultation

Creating your custom jewelry begins with a consultation at our jewelry store. You’ll make an appointment to meet with one of our in-house jewelry designers who will help you fine tune every detail of your design. If you have an exact idea in mind, your designer will make sure every detail of your piece matches your vision. If you only have a rough idea of what you want, your designer will provide guidance in order to hone in on the right design for you. Our goal is to meet you where you are so we can ensure you’re well informed and that your design is perfect. Note that we can provide two types of custom design at Michael & Son’s Jewelers. We can create custom jewelry entirely from scratch or create semi-custom jewelry based on an existing piece of jewelry. An example of a semi-custom jewelry design would be a slightly altered version of a wedding band. For instance, if you love the overall design of a particular yellow gold diamond wedding band but you want it in rose gold with blue sapphires, we can create that for you. We can also alter proportions, add embellishments, and so on.

Step 2

Sketch

Once you and your designer have a good idea of what you want for your piece’s design and materials, they’ll create a design sketch. This will give you an initial idea of what your piece will look like once all the design details are married together.

Step 3

Digital Model

After your initial sketch is approved, we’ll move forward into the digital rendering stage. We’ll create a 3D model of your design that you can view from multiple angles. We can make as many changes as necessary until your design is perfect.

Step 4

Wax Model

The last model we’ll make is a wax model. This is a 3D printed version of your digital 3D model that you can touch. A wax model allows you to get a much more tactile understanding of your design and its real life proportions. We can edit your wax model as needed to ensure you love every detail.

Step 5

Creation

Once your wax model is approved, we’ll move into the final stage: production. Our in-house artisans will cast your design, polish it, and set it with your chosen stones. We’ll then give it a final inspection before contacting you to let you know your bespoke piece of jewelry is ready to be picked up.
